A Photographer's Guide to Curaçao's Golden Hour

Golden hour is the short window after sunrise and before sunset when the light turns soft, warm, and flattering. In Curaçao, it can make the difference between harsh, squinting photos and images that glow. Here's everything you need to know to plan your wedding, engagement, or photo session around it.

Golden hour in Curaçao is shorter than you think

Because Curaçao is close to the equator, the sun sets steeply and quickly. Golden hour here is closer to 30–45 minutes than a full hour, and twilight fades fast. That's why timing matters more here than in Europe or North America.

Sunrise and sunset times through the year

Curaçao doesn't use daylight saving time, and the times shift only slightly across the year.

Sunrise: roughly between 6:10 and 7:00 in the morning.

Sunset: roughly between 6:10 and 7:05 in the evening.

Earliest sunsets: around November.

Latest sunsets: around June and July.

Always check the exact sunset time for your date when planning.

The best time for photos

Evening: start photos about 60–90 minutes before sunset. You get warm light, cooler temperatures, and quieter beaches.

Morning: start around sunrise. The light is soft, the beaches are almost empty, and it's the coolest time of day.

Avoid midday: between roughly 10 and 4, the sun is almost directly overhead, which creates harsh shadows, squinting eyes, and intense heat.

Best golden hour locations

West coast beaches: beaches like Grote Knip, Playa Lagun, and Porto Marie face the sea in the west, so the sun sets over the water. Perfect for evening sessions.

Willemstad waterfront: the colorful facades of Handelskade catch warm light in the late afternoon.

North and east coast: wilder landscapes that work well for sunrise sessions.

Inland and landhuizen: open landscapes and historic buildings that glow in low, side light.

How to plan your wedding ceremony around golden hour

Start your ceremony about 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. That gives you time for the ceremony, hugs, and family photos, and then you step into golden hour for your couple portraits. Plan 20–30 minutes for portraits right before sunset, and your guests can enjoy cocktails in the meantime.

Example: if sunset is at 6:30 pm, start your ceremony around 5:00 pm, do family photos at 5:30 pm, and couple portraits from 5:55 to 6:30 pm.

Weather and season

Curaçao is sunny most of the year. The drier months usually give clear skies, while the rainy season (roughly October to January) brings short showers that often pass quickly. Clouds aren't bad news: they soften the light and often create the most dramatic sunsets.

Be ready early, because the light moves fast here.

Plan hair and makeup to finish at least 30 minutes before your shoot.

Bring water, since it's still warm even late in the day.
